Video Units from Google

Since Google bought YouTube, it is not surprising they are looking for different ways to make money from it. As I was reading Indside AdSense I stumbled upon this article. Video Units is Google’s new offer for advertisers. I must admit that AdSense seems to be less and less effective, probably because of Ad blindness. Needless to say, it would be really nice to work with something new. However, I am not sure Video units are what I am looking for. The reason I really like AdSense, is because of its simplicity. Video Units seems to be the exact opposite. According to Google, a video unit will display two ads:
• Text overlay ads, which are displayed in the bottom 20% of the video as it plays
• Companion ads, which appear above the video content within the player
My first thought was, that this will require too much space. Obviously you will not be able to modify the ad size in the same way as the normal AdSense ads, since the video needs to be viewable. Furthermore, I feel like the simplicity is gone. Mixing video and ads is too much, specially when 20% of the video is covered by it. Maybe it turns out I am all wrong. But I won’t be able to tell you before it is released in Europe. I will definitely give it a shot, when possible. If anyone has tried it, please let me know what you think of it.

Adsense is poor not just for the ad blindness factor, but also because more and more people are getting to know that they are actually ads. There used to be a time when most people did not even know that they are ads and kept clicking on them..
everyone knows that adsense are ads now and it doesnt work as well as previously
I think it is smart for Google to come out with a new way for advertising, new things grab people’s attention faster then anything. I would be very interested to hear feedback from someone who has had experience with it.
I’m interested to see how it’ll go, specifically how it will influence some of the content providers.
One of the reasons film makers use youtube is because of the lack of intrusive adverts. 20% of the display is a considerable amount, perhaps too much to take into consideration when making a video.
Unlike adsense, everyone is going to figure out very quickly that these are ads anyway, so it’s not really a great solution to the current ad-blindness, perhaps even helping to create ad-saturation.
Sounds interesting. I don’t video units are the are the way to go either.
They most liekly will improve, although i havent been impressed with the video ads i have seen so far.
I’ve always wondered if it was possible to profitable monetize YouTube. I guess if anyone can do it, it would be Google, but they still haven’t managed to make it profitable yet, have they?
Also, are Adsense revenues going down or something? What makes you think that Adsense is less and less effective, other than ad blindness?
Google would always do something better and better, coz that would be a bait for users to gain profit about it.

The sizing on this things is just horrible. if Adsense is able to make it more flexible to make it integrate better with your site it will be a welcomed income earner for certain niche sites.
It is interesting you are experiencing this in Europe. I’m a web designer from Sydney Australia (as my title suggests) and my YouTube shows no ads whatsoever. It must be the pattern that major social network changes occur for you guys first and then us - a German colleague recently told me that the German version of Facebook already contains in-notification feed advertisements, something we have not encountered yet.
This is a good thing for me. By watching blogs like yours I can get ahead on marketing strategies.
You will find people on social networks will click advertisments provided they are relevant and well made - the whole meme of Youtube is that the best videos (which are typically virals produced by large companies or smaller businesses that know how to produce them) end up becoming part of the main network. The cool thing about Facebook though is since you can access a persons age, gender and interest you are able to market to particular groups. If they could do this for Youtube amounts they could have high relevance ads and make a killing.
New things always attract. And when it is an announcement from a dominant Search Engine like Google, it will be a successful resource. Thanks for bringing up the news into light.
As long as the ads are not covering up the video I don’t mind …
How have these worked out for you? I tried them for a while and wasn’t able to get any decent payouts…
I really think Adsense in general is losing its umph. What they really need to do is combine both text and images to make the ads more appealing. The CTR is starting to drop dramatically in some of my sites.
everyone knows that adsense are ads now and it doesnt work as well as previously
These actually don’t work to well. I ran them on a few of my sites and they slow the site down. Kind of like broadcasting a youtube video does.
although everyone know that adsense are ads now, but i think it is still the best among the best. :P. yet right now they are add some function in the ads - a slide function - still in alpha, or beta version ? huuh
I’d love to see video ads in the sponsored link section. That would put a new spin on advertising and something new to be abused by all rendering that as obsolete as Adsense too!
But Currently this feature is open only to publishers located in the United States with English-language websites. I hope google will come up with something new for those outside U.S.
I saw this new feature in my adsense account. I haven’t installed one on my site. I wonder if its worth it or if you get a good return vs the space that the adsense units take up.
Adsense Ads are performing badly nowadays. The Adsense team needs to do more.
In my experience so far, the video ads have been intrusive and unrelevant. I’m not happy with what I see so far, but I’ll give it a few more weeks before I pull it off my site. Interesting to read other reactions in the comments. Thanks for posting this.
I don’t think it take too much space. Isn’t that just a link to a video that is on some other server (YouTube). I haven’t installe it jet, but it will be interesting to try. Does somebodey have some popular site link that works with these??
too bad it doesn’t work on other country such as asian ones - that’s a bad minus point for google’s efforts
At least Google is giving you the option to make some revenue from videos on your site. Now if this monetization method actually works, it might be a great thing!
I think any new forms of advertising is a good thing. Where other forms of advertising might not work, this may. Although I don’t think I will personally use it, I’m sure it will be a viable option for some.
I was not happy with video units on my site.
It makes sense that they came out with them since they now own Utube. But, i did not care for the video units.
Im not to sure they are going to stay with these for to long. Because im hearing romours there also scrapping referral system aswell. Which i think is a decent idea. Anyway the future will be interesting and im predicting video adds won’t be successful.
Regards Andrew
I don’t think I’ve seen any yet, but if the ads are clean and clutter free, I could see how they would be a good thing. People are liking video more and more, so if it’s a user friendly video ad, it would probably get more clicks than conventional adsense.
I’ve tried these on my site, but they haven’t been to successful in make money for me. Actually regular adsense ads are performing much better for CTR.
I have heard the relevance of these video are low. One of my friend implemented it on his site and found regular text ads to have a better conversion
I just hope the video ads that get displayed don’t become obtrusive like some banner ads have become.
I used the video ads on my site for a while but I wasn’t happy with them.
The text adsense ads work better for me than the video ads. Of course, my site is not very video based, so I think the ads stick out like a sore thumb.
Personally, I think Google is just out to make big bucks out of their ad poackages discounting the actual relevance of the advertising site…
I haven’t used video ads uptill but after reading this post i think it has lots of drawbacks such as space consuming, also you can not change the size of the ad. And one more thing that it will take more time to load as it contains video file in the ad.
I would agree that they would probably become annoying like some of those banner ads. I still like the text link ads anyhow and will probably use those for a while.
Saying that everyone knows about adsense is a little bit dumb, there are millions new to the internet monthly… they dont know for sure, they have never seen them…
Google find more and more ways to attract people.ITube was one of the first steps I think
