Tired of being picky?

I used to be a very picky eater when I was younger. Just by looking at some kind of food, I was able to tell if I would like it or not. At least that’s what I believed. And by believing it, it actually became the truth. I would convince myself, that I didn’t like it, and obviously the result was that I didn’t like it. Despite what my parents might have thought, I actually did not do this to annoy them. Trust me, I did not enjoy the moments when I had to eat something I did not want to. Especially when we were visiting other people. I always came up with some excuse like “I am not very hungry right now”. Of course they could always read me like an open book, and tell that I was one big lie. Of course everyone did their best to be a good host, and always asked if I would like something else. As if I wasn’t embarrassed enough already, this just gave me increased attention from everyone. That was definitely the last thing I wanted!
My parents must have hated these situations as well, but they always kept my hopes up, telling me this would change as I grew older. And what do you know, they were right! Not that I’m not picky any more, but I’m certainly getting better. Do you have the same problem? Well if you don’t feel like waiting for this to just pass away as you get older, but actually would like some tips on how to speed up the process, read on.

Try it when you are drunk: It’s not that I want to encourage people to start drinking alcohol to overcome the pickiness. I can see the dilemma here, because most of us are picky when we are young, which is not the time you should be drinking alcohol. However, if you, like me, are over the teenage years and still have this problem, then I guess this advice is acceptable. When we drink alcohol, we tend to become a bit more open minded. Talking to girls, doing magic tricks and spending money seems to be a lot easier than any other day. The same goes for eating things, which you are pretty sure you don’t like. You don’t even have to be drunk for this effect to take place. A few beers or some glasses of wine will do as well. However if you decide to go for something you consider really disgusting, you better pull out the vodka.

Wait until you are really hungry: If you plan on trying something new, which you are really sure you don’t like, then wait with dinner until you are really hungry. This will make it so much easier to eat whatever is served. I am not talking about starvation here. But I know from myself that the hungrier I am, the easier I find it to eat pretty much anything. Besides, doing this at home will not work as well as doing it when being a guest somewhere. At home you will always have the option to just grab something else. This will be a bit more difficult if you are a guest. The best place would probably be where you are not able to get anything else, no matter how much you really want it. I remember the first time I realized how well this works, during a trek in Thailand. There were no refrigerators, shops or restaurants. That sure made me start eating whatever was served!
